“Manitas” in Motion- Spanish/English
“Manitas” in Motion provides Spanish, English, and American Sign Language (ASL) curriculum materials that are age-appropriate for preschool through 2nd grade. We offer “Manitas” in Motion – Spanish and “Manitas” in Motion – English with American Sign Language (ASL) as the bridge between the two spoken languages. The program is designed to build oral language development and early literacy skills in young dual language learners with Spanish as a native language as well as those learning English as a second language.
What does “Manitas” in Motion include?
Included are materials one would need to teach English/Spanish to preschool and early elementary grade students throughout the academic year. The music CD’s Teacher’s Guide and Sing-Along and Sign With Me DVD are the main components of the program. These easy-to-use resources target vocabulary to support learning of basic concepts and build the language to literacy connection. Lessons are color coded for easy reference bringing academic vocabulary in English and Spanish to your fingertips.
The “Manitas” in Motion Spanish/English CD’s/DVD’s for children are the highlights of the program. There is a short three to four minute song for each thematic unit. Each song features a musical style from a different country in Latin America; Salsa from Cuba for The Alphabet/ El abecedario, Tex-Mex for the Introductions Songs The Circle/el cìrculo, Plena from Puerto Rico on The Colors Song/La canción de los colores, Bachata from the Dominican Republic on Counting From One to Ten/ Contando del uno al diez and Cumbia from Colombia on The Farm Animals/Los animales de la granja. You’ll learn all of the ASL signs to be able to teach your students the entire song in sign language!
ASL is incorporated throughout the “Manitas” in Motion program starting with The Sing Along and Sign DVD. The DVD offers two viewing options. The Learn to Sign option teaches you all the ASL signs you will need to know and practice for each song in order to teach the children. The Sing and Sign option provides you and the students the opportunity to learn the song and signs as the words scroll along the bottom in English or Spanish.
The “Manitas” in Motion (Spanish/English) Teacher’s Guide is an excellent resource for any school setting – preschool, home school, public school, private school, playgroups, after-school clubs, etc. It is suitable for use in bilingual classrooms, in dual-language classrooms, as an enrichment program, or for pull-out programs. The activities or interventions can be adapted for an RTI model or multi-tier approach used to efficiently differentiate instruction for all students. Differentiated instruction occurs by increasing intensity of instruction at Tier I classroom level, Tier II small group and more intense, or Tier III more individualized and intense. Although the activities are geared for ages 3 – 8 (PreK – 2nd grade), this program is useful for students of all ages.
Thematic organization of The “Manitas” in Motion Teacher’s Guide includes; Introductions, the Alphabet, Colors, Zoo and Farm Animals, Numbers1-10, and Spatial Concepts. They include a music video, key vocabulary taught in ASL, art project, action games, and interactive card games. The ASL acts as the “bridge” between the two spoken languages.
